Word and meaning, together

For a language learner, the useful thing about a word is rarely just its spelling. It's how it sounds, what part of speech it is, and what it actually means in a sentence. These tools keep those pieces next to each other rather than testing spelling alone.

Word lists by topic and grade. Every word shows its pronunciation, part of speech, a plain meaning and an example sentence in one place, so you're not switching between a dictionary and a word list. Each list has a board that plays only words from it.

Word of the day. One word a day with its full lesson attached: pronunciation, part of speech, meaning and an example. A small daily habit rather than a long study session.

Spelling practice. Your browser reads a word and its example sentence aloud, and you type what you heard. A close miss can be tried again in practice mode, so hearing the word correctly matters as much as spelling it.

Vocabulary quiz. Ten questions, four possible meanings each, one correct answer. A missed word goes into a review deck and comes back later, so it isn't a one-shot test.

Vocabulary matching. Six words and six meanings per round, with no timer running. A calm way to check whether a meaning has actually stuck.

Word finder. Type the letters you know, plus a ? for any you don't, and get real words that match, each with a meaning shown next to it. Useful when you've heard a word but aren't sure how to spell it.

How to pick one

If pronunciation is the priority right now, start with spelling practice or the word of the day, since both read the word aloud. If meaning is the focus, work through a topic or grade word list, then check yourself with the quiz. If you already half-know a word and just need to confirm it, the word finder gets you there fastest. Matching is a good lower-pressure option for reviewing a list you've already studied once.

What stays the same across these

None of these need an account, so there's nothing to set up before a student starts. Progress and any streak are stored in the browser on the device being used, not on a server. Everything runs in a regular browser, with nothing to install, so it works the same on a phone, a tablet or a shared computer. Word lists are described plainly too: built from general teaching materials and dictionaries, matched to a topic or level, not tied to one exam board or curriculum.

For teachers

  • Pair pronunciation with meaning early. Assign a word list before a quiz or matching

round, so students meet the pronunciation and meaning together first.

  • Use spelling practice for listening. Since the browser reads each word aloud,

spelling practice doubles as a short listening exercise.

  • Group by level, not by age. Word lists come by topic and grade, so different

students in the same class can work from a list matched to their level.

  • Review, don't just introduce. The quiz's review deck brings missed words back

automatically, which suits a class that meets more than once a week.

More vocabulary practice

For study habits that apply beyond any one game, see how to increase your vocabulary. If a specific grade level fits better than a topic list, vocabulary games for middle school and vocabulary games for high school organize practice by grade instead.

Questions

Are these games good for any age of English learner?

Yes. They're not built around a specific age, just around pairing pronunciation and meaning, so they work for a learner of any age.

Is there a timer I have to beat?

No. The word lists and matching game have no timer. Spelling has a practice mode with retries. Only test mode is timed to one try per word, and it's optional.

Does the site say the words out loud?

Spelling practice reads each word and its example sentence aloud in the browser. Word lists and the word of the day show written pronunciation alongside the meaning.

Do I need an account?

No. Nothing on the site asks for an account or personal details. Progress is kept in your browser on your device.

Can a teacher use these with a class of mixed levels?

Yes. Since word lists come by topic and grade, a teacher can point different students to a list that fits their level and have everyone play the same kind of board.
